A Vegetarian – To Be Or Not To Be
October 18th, 2011 by jonmullane

In the last week, I was what is considered to be a vegetarian 4 out of 7 days – you know, no meat, but some dairy. That’s not unusual as that is pretty much the way it is for me most weeks. And I really like to eat veggies, I like the taste and I don’t consider it a sacrifice. The thing I noticed most about this though is the days when I ‘eat clean’, I do feel different – better actually. Lighter, clearer. The question is, can I go all the way and completely eliminate the one last meat source, poultry from my diet ? It is a challenge for me, for it means coming up with some new vegetarian meals to replace with. But it’s been on my mind for the last year or so about taking this one step closer to becoming a full fledged ‘veggie’. It may be the right thing to do in all respects. Next step – eating Veggie for a whole week and see how it goes!

Jon Mullane December 2010 Newsletter – It’s Christmas Time!

Christmas Time

Season’s Greetings & a big hello to everyone!

I never for a minute thought I’d ever be releasing a Xmas single, but here I am, with a new song called ‘Christmas Time’ . It’s an uptempo original song that’s got a bit of a U2 vibe to it, and it came to be in very serendipitous way.

I recently played a show in support of a local Food & Furnitue bank in my hometown of Halifax when one of the managing directors there, Tom Gouthro, mentioned to me he had a Christmas song he had been working on, and would I have a listen to it. He said he felt very grateful for all that had come into his life, and he wanted to get that across in a song about Christmas. I thought that was a great message, and after hearing the very rough demo, I felt I could re-work it into a 3 minute Christmas pop/rock song. So after a complete makeover, co-write and excellent production by Creighton Doane, here it is – a song with a catchy chorus and an important message – let’s be grateful for what we have and try and help others who are less fortunate. I felt I could stand behind that, and I hope this song inspires others in a similar way throughout this season.

BTW, $30,000 was raised for the Food Bank that night, and at a time of year where it is very much needed.

If it inspires you or gets you excited about Christmas, please share and promote the song to your friends and family. And don’t forget to request it at your favourite local radio station. If you’d like to download a copy from iTunes , click HERE
Here’s link to a little video for the song, it has a bit of a Charlie Brownish quality to it – feel free to cut & paste the link to your Social network sites – Christmas Time video

‘The One That Got Away’

I’m consistently getting notes & messages from so many of you about my song “The One That Got Away” – it’s a great feeling and very rewarding as a songwriter that it is connecting with so many people – keep them coming!

The song is still getting lots of play at radio stations across Canada, and it will be released in the U.S. as a radio single in early 2011. You can help by requesting it at your favourite local radio station.

Hope you all have a great Christmas and prosperous New Year! Jon

Jon Mullane’s ‘SHIFT’ Set For Release in Europe on July 23, 2010
July 17th, 2010 by jonmullane

Canadian rock recording artist Jon Mullane’s new album ‘Shift’ will be released in Europe on July 23, 2010 through UK label Escape Music.

“Shift is a modern sounding, confidant, upbeat rock album that’s as radio and chart friendly as any rock album you are ever likely to hear.”
Rock Realms, UK

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Jon’s songwriting combines catchy melodies with driving rock lines and his songs find their way into sports arenas and onto radio playlists because of their power to inspire.

The album’s introspective ballad, “The One That Got Away” is the first single released in 2010 and has garnered worthy comparisons to the likes of The Fray, Five For Fighting and One Republic. This multi-format song is garnering extensive radio play across the nation and is strongly connecting with listeners while steadily gaining momentum on the Canadian BDS Top 40/CHR Chart.

‘Shift’ was recorded in Halifax and Toronto and produced by Creighton Doane. The album was released in Canada in February of 2010, and was preceded by four charting radio singles , all included on the album: “Go the Distance”, “Change Your Life”, “Got It Goin’ On”, and “Make You Move” (which bookends the CD with two distinctly different mixes). “Make You Move” saw heavy chart action and was featured in NBC’s international promotional campaign for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and was the official theme for the World Canoe ’09 Championships.

“Shift continues where my last album, The Source, left off – a shift in momentum, a shift in direction, and a shift in energy”, declares Mullane. “I’m totally excited about this album bringing me a step closer to my fans in Europe and being heard by a growing international audience.”

The Making of an Album – 15 Tips
May 13th, 2010 by jonmullane
Jon Mullane - Shift

Jon Mullane - Shift

Part 1 – in the midst of recording a new album titled Shift, I’m thinking,do people now prefer singles to albums?

Part 2 – We’ve approached the new album in a slightly different way, releasing 3 radio singles before launching the full CD.

Part 3 – Just like house renovations, recording an album always takes longer & costs more than you think it will at the beginning!!

Part 4 – Recording a lead vocal – the first take is usually never the best, sometimes going back another day for a re- sing works well.

Part 5 – more vocals – find the best time of day/night that works for you – I find late afternoon /early evening I get the best performance.

Part 6 -more time should be spent on getting the vox just right than any other aspect of the song -it’s what listeners connect with the most.

Part 7 – allowing room for new songs – just co-wrote a new song which could end up as a bonus track on the album – spontaneity is good!

Part 8 – writing lyrics & recording vox for last song of the album – sometimes the best work happens when these are done simultaneously.

Part 9 – Mixing – take your time, live with the each song for several days before commiting to the mix – digital recording allows for this.

Part 10 – mixing -should vocals be upfront or more in the mix – sometimes a tough call – comes down to instinct, sometimes genre of music.

Part 11 – mixing – listen to new mixes on as many different speakers as possible, including the car – it should be consistent on all systems.

Part 12 -Mixing -in the final stages now, and listening is the key – never press discs or post files right away, wait and listen for awhile.

Part 13 mixing – I’m finding ballads are the hardest to mix, perhaps because they tend to be more exposed – both vocals & instruments .

Part 14 – Mixing is done! now down to details like CD credits, finalizing graphics etc. meticulous but an important step.

Part 15 – approving album artwork – one last chance, once it’s printed, there’s no tuning back – make sure at least 2 people proof it!

The Show That Got Away!
March 17th, 2010 by jonmullane

Shift A few weeks ago, my band & I were scheduled to perform at a club in downtown Halifax, NS.

The event was a combined CD launch for my new album’ Shift’ and a fundraiser for amateur sport in support of Canada Games 2011.

It was raining   – hard – and the wind was blowing  – even harder  – then, at 4:55 pm, 5 minutes before the start of the event, the lights went out!  .. and didn’t come back on….

..and the brave souls who faced the elements to come to the show tried to get in the door —   but could not get in … there was to be no show that night!

So there was no show, no launch… it would have been a blast!! ( pardon the pun). What can you do? There’s a first time for everything, and for me, this was the first show that was ever cancelled due to a power failure  – some people think this is happening more often now in NS.

So perhaps another time, another place we shall try again… but the record did get released on itunes – http://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/shift/id359933330

.. and we haven’t had any storms since then!

I'm playing for Bustamove
December 12th, 2009 by jonmullane

On January 30, I’m gigging for Bustamove.

At 9. In the morning.

A little early for me … and my band, but hey, it’s a good cause.

Bustamove is a fundraiser for breast cancer equipment. Hundreds of people will gather at the Metro Centre to exercise for 6 hours.

They’re aiming to raise money for a digital mammogram machine.

My band is playing as part of the kick off to get things moving. One of the leaders will be Richard Simmons.

My tune Make you Move will feature prominently.

I’m hoping it will make the Bustamove participants move.
